Since infertility and the treatment of it is a burden to the couple in general and the female in particular, ongoing efforts are made to improve treatment results by developing new hormone preparations and new technologies within all stages of treatment.

For decades, Chinese acupuncture has been used as a supplement or replacement of standard medical treatment, and the effect of this type of treatment is substantiated and well-documented, and it has therefore been natural to include acupuncture as yet another type of infertility treatment

Scientific studies within gynaecology and obstetrics has shown that acupuncture relieves menstrual pain, pregnancy sickness and hot flashes as well as reduces the duration of deliveries, thereby providing helpful pain relief. The side-effects of acupuncture are more or less non-existent.

In the case of IVF/ICSI, acupuncture is given prior to and after embryo transfer in order to enhance the chance of implantation (the embryo/embryos attach(es) to the lining of the uterus and begin(s) ingrowth). The theory behind this is that the stimulation of specific acupuncture points is assumed to increase blood supply to the uterus and reduce the body’s natural stress response. A so-called meta-analysis conducted by an expert group following concluded that “current preliminary evidence suggests that acupuncture given with embryo transfer improves rates of pregnancy and live birth among women undergoing in vitro fertilization” (British Medical Journal, Mar 2008; 336: 545-549). Based on this, we offer acupuncture in connection with embryo transfer at our clinic. However, you are also welcome to contact your local acupuncture practitioner specializing in IVF.
